Lee “Scratch” Perry

Kung Fu Meets the Dragon.jpg

These Fists Break Bricks says farewell to pioneering reggae producer and dubmaster extraordinaire Lee “Scratch” Perry (March 20, 1936 - August 29, 2021). Albums like Return of Django, Eastwood Rides Again and The Good, The Bad and the Upsetters reflected his love of Italian westerns. When kung fu movies became the rage worldwide, he fell hard for that genre as well and kicked out Kung Fu Meets the Dragon in 1975, ten tracks on wax that express “the true roots of Jamaican music” with rhythms “well suited to the practice of Kung Fu,” as the liner notes by D. Lascelles Harris explain on the record sleeve.
